Pastel
painting demo
Look at how I
develop a portrait, using the following materials:
| paper:
|
Canson
Mi-Teintes approx. 20" x 26" (50 x 65 cm), the smooth side. I never use
white, but a background color to complement the main object. |
| pastels:
|
NuPastels
(hard) for the first sketch and Rembrandt for the full painting. I
sometimes use the very soft Sennelier in certain areas, where I need a
velvety effect. |
| mats
& frames |
I cut
my own mats (acid free) with a Dexter mat cutter. It is a small
handheld cutter, which gives a bevel edge with a professional look.
I mainly use wooden frames in gold or in soft colors to complement the
colors of the painting |
Look
at the various stages below in creating a portrait of Tina

I first made a sketch with hard pastels,
using only sienna and umber tones. |

I then applied the Rembrandt pastels,
adding short strokes in one direction. |

Because the model (Tina) has one blue
and one brown eye, I decided to do a monochromatic painting in the full
range of burnt sienna colors only, except for the blue eye of course. |
The
finished painting framed:
Tina
